Mothers' Groups

Our Mothers' Groups are the backbone of the VBC, our strongest and longest tradition. The mums make friends. The kids make friends. Mums get out of the house which is so important, especially when staying at home with a new baby.

Groups are created based on the ages of the children and broken into four groups per year. For example, mothers with babies born in January, February, March 2007 are one group; those with babies born in April, May, June 2007 are another group; July, August, September 2007; and October, November, December 2007. In cases where a group is too big, we might have to split it into two; in cases where groups are too small, we might combine them.

Many of our Mothers' Groups start before the babies are even born. As soon as we have enough new members to form a group and one of them volunteers to be the Group Coordinator, the mums start to meet. This is a great way to get to know other mums in the same situation, share pregnancy and childbirth information, and just make new friends.

Typically, the groups meet once per week. The time and place vary greatly from group to group, as does how often each mom hosts a meeting. While most groups meet in each other's homes, it is not required as long as each member agrees to organize a meeting. Meetings can take place in a variety of venues: cafes and restaurants for pregnant mums or when babies are small; parks, playgrounds, pools when weather permits; and other appropriate indoor venues. While the host is not required to provide abundant food and drink for the group, it is common for basic drinks and some snacks to be available - this, of course, is entirely up to the host.

Groups are overseen by a volunteer Group Coordinator. Without the coordinator, there would be no group! Please help her out by keeping your e-mail and address information up to date and letting her know when you are moving or wanting to terminate your membership. Please also help out your fellow group members by RSVPing to the hostess when asked to so that she can plan accordingly.

The VBC acknowledges that we have members from all over the world, from many different walks of life, and who all have different parenting ideas and beliefs. We strongly urge members to respect those differences and to support each other as much as possible as we all take on the most challenging and rewarding job in the world.

Remember to notify your Group Coordinator about any changes in your e-mail, address, or phone number. More importantly, let her know if you are moving away and if you no longer wish to be on any of the VBC e-mail lists (Mothers' Group, Distric Group, Notices). This is extremely important for us in order to maintain our database!
